Chartered in 1831, UNE is Maine’s largest private university, an innovative educational community with two distinctive coastal Maine campuses, in Portland and nearby Biddeford, and a vibrant new campus in Tangier, Morocco.

As an independent non-profit institution with 13,000 enrolled students that is included in the 2018 Princeton Review’s Best 382 Colleges guide, UNE offers a uniquely cosmopolitan, interdisciplinary academic environment with an emphasis on global engagement and hands-on learning experiences. Home to Maine’s only medical and dental schools as well as 14 other health profession degree programs, UNE’s comprehensive health education mission is built on a pioneering interprofessional approach that also includes pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy, social work, and an array of other health professions.

With an increased priority on and support for research, external funding for research and scholarship has grown by 800% in the last 10 years to $49 million ($19 million annually). Cross-university research centers for excellence include the COBRE for Study of Pain and Sensory Function, Neuroscience, and Marine Science, with curriculum development, service learning, and some research and scholarship found in the centers for Health Innovations, Teaching and Learning, and the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC).
