Meet Founder and Clinical Director – Trenton J. Peterson

Trenton J. Peterson, MA, LMFT, LADC is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with more than 20 years of experience in clinical practice. He completed his undergraduate studies in Behavioral Sciences at North Central University and later earned a Master of Arts in Counseling and Psychological Services from St. Mary’s University. Trenton’s education and training include a post-graduate certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy and a post-graduate certificate in Co-occurring Disorders from the Alfred Adler Graduate School.

Early in his career, Trenton worked with families providing in-home family therapy to families who were referred by Child Protection, Juvenile Probation, and Children’s Mental Health from the county. In 2004, he went into private practice full-time, and after growing his practice, he decided to expand even further by opening Genuine Therapy Center in 2007, where he serves as the Clinical Director.

Trenton’s clinical approach includes Narrative, Adlerian, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Experiential modalities. He provides supervision for pre-licensure Marriage and Family Therapists and clinical counselors working to become LPCs or LPCCs. Trenton’s areas of experience include anxiety, depression, trauma, first responders, couples, healthy and unhealthy sexuality, emotional regulation, empowerment, ADHD, anger management, stress management, family conflict, grief and loss, adoption (adoptee and adoptive parent resourcing), and addiction.

Aside from his practice, Trenton is a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor and a Minnesota-approved supervisor for the Board of Marriage and Family Therapy (LAMFT, LMFT) and the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy (LPC, LPCC). He worked at Helena Family Support as an individual supervisor for all CTSS Skills workers and was a clinical director at Optiovillage, Inc., maintaining operations and clinical management for Co-occurring Disorder Intensive Outpatient Treatment Center. In 2014, Trenton was a drug and alcohol counselor intern at Ark Counseling, LLC.

Apart from his practice, Trenton is a social entrepreneur and co-founder of OptioVillage, which is dedicated to supporting social impact organizations by providing them with the tools they need to succeed. Through Trenton’s leadership, OptioVillage has become a trusted partner for organizations working in areas such as education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. Trenton’s ultimate vision is to create a world where social impact organizations have access to the resources they need to make a difference and improve the lives of those they serve.
