ENT Surgeons of Western New England Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary!

PROVIDING INNOVATIVE OTOLARYNGOLOGY CARE TO THE PIONEER VALLEY FOR OVER 50 YEARS

Celebrating 50 years of providing quality health care to patients throughout the Western Massachusetts community, Ear, Nose & Throat Surgeons of Western New England, LLC invites you to travel with us from the day of the practice’s inception through the years to present time.

Established initially as Ear, Nose & Throat Associates of Springfield, the practice was started 50 years ago by Sheldon Goldberg, MD with a single office location on Maple Street in Springfield, later moving to 299 Carew Street and 2 Medical Center Drive on the campus of Baystate Medical Center.  The group’s name was changed in January 2008 to Ear, Nose & Throat Surgeons of Western New England to better represent the broad demographic of our patient population now coming to us from throughout the Pioneer Valley.

In 1969 Carl E. Reiner, MD joined the practice, working side by side with Dr. Goldberg for many years and retiring in 2012 after an illustrious and rewarding 43-year career managing the health of his ENT patients, from infants to the elderly.  He saw the addition of several physicians to the practice as services expanded beyond the city of Springfield.  Dr. Reiner is now spending his time enjoying his family and friends, traveling, and playing golf.

Barry R. Jacobs, MD, FACS arrived in the practice in 1991 and brought innovations in the areas of pediatrics and Head & Neck Surgery to the region.  He modernized the management of pediatric airway disorders with the use of the laser, telescopes and video for diagnosis and treatment.  In addition, he worked collaboratively with the plastic surgeons on the surgical management of head and neck cancer, performing cases that would have previously been sent to Boston.  He introduced endoscopic sinus surgery to the region and later spearheaded the development of an allergy diagnosis and treatment program at the practice.

In 1994, Jerry M. Schreibstein, MD, FACS arrived and expanded the techniques of minimally invasive sinus surgery used in the region, performing with neurosurgery the first minimally invasive endoscopic resection of a pituitary tumor.  He added thyroid surgery and minimally invasive parathyroid surgery to the practice.  In the late 1990s, Dr. Schreibstein introduced image guided sinus surgery and developed the Minimally Invasive Sinus Surgery program at Baystate Medical Center.  More recent minimally invasive techniques introduced to the region by Dr. Schreibstein include Balloon Sinuplasty, steroid stents in sinus surgery and, in June 2017, the first balloon dilatation of the Eustachian tube performed in Western New England.

The group then collaborated with Northeast Hearing Instruments to improve access to hearing devices, added in-office videostroboscopy for the diagnosis of voice disorders, and expanded in-office treatment of snoring and sleep disorders including radio frequency palate reduction and Pillar implants.

Recognizing the need to improve otologic care in western Massachusetts, the group partnered with Tufts Medical Center to bring Dr. Nikolas Blevins to the valley part time.  That set the stage for Theodore P. Mason, MD to join the practice in 2002.  At that time, Dr. Mason brought new techniques for the management of chronic ear and mastoid disease, added laser stapedotomy for the management of otosclerosis, and started the Cochlear Implant program at Baystate Medical Center.

The Cochlear Implant program, now in its 15th year, has successful treated children as young as 16 months and adults as old as 90 years.  Over the years, Dr. Mason has continued to bring new technology such as minimally invasive bone anchored hearing systems including BAHA implants for single-sided deafness to our patient population.

Having opened an office in Ware at Mary Lane Hospital in 1996, we then expanded to Hampshire County with an office in Northampton in October 2005, in order to service our patients in the upper valley, Vermont and Berkshire County.  Several of our physicians who see patients in the Northampton office also have Cooley Dickinson surgical privileges for the convenience of patients wishing to stay within their community.

Daniel I. Plosky, MD, FACS joined the group in 2009 and expanded our management of head and neck cancer by introducing the surgical robot for the resection of tonsil and tongue base tumors and for the management of sleep apnea.  Also joining our practice through the years and adding their unique skill sets in the care of our patients are Jacquelyn Reilly MD, Lauren Busekroos MD, and Robert Eppsteiner MD.

We welcome you all to our practice as we begin our next 50 years.
